Perfusion
Perfusion is the field of science that manages extracorporeal blood circulation under the supervision of relevant specialist physicians, using the heart-lung machine during interventions involving the heart and/or major blood vessels. In our hospital, perfusionists form an expert team involved in interventions related to the heart and/or major blood vessels in all 12 operating rooms, as well as in Adult Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiology Intensive Care Unit, and Angiography Operating Room.
Working in collaboration with the relevant specialist physicians, perfusionists:
Manage the heart-lung machine. Manage extracorporeal circulation equipment. Monitor the patient's physiological parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal circulation and intervene as necessary. Perform necessary procedures related to myocardial protection (cardioplegia application). Conduct hemofiltration-ultrafiltration and apheresis procedures. Monitor anticoagulation, analyze it, and perform necessary interventions. Perform therapeutic hypothermia-hyperthermia applications, thermogenic lavage, and body temperature regulation. Administer blood product transfusions, necessary medications, and anesthetic agents through the extracorporeal circulation equipment. As an Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) center, we transfer patients from other centers with ECMO application in place to our clinic with our team members. Perform autotransfusion and cell saver procedures. Perform isolated organ and extremity perfusion and administer chemotherapeutics and cellular therapies. Assist in preserving donor tissues and organs when needed. Manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and short, medium, and long-term ventricular assist devices. Manage intravascular membrane oxygenation. Monitor blood gases and blood biochemistry, analyze them, and perform necessary interventions. Actively participate in preoperative patient preparation and postoperative mortality and morbidity meetings. Perform thrombocyte gel production when needed. Consult with physicians on the required materials and techniques for maintaining extracorporeal circulation functions. Provide support during the transportation of patients on extracorporeal circulation support. Maintain patient records related to extracorporeal circulation systems and patient circulation. Support the training and competency/performance evaluation of perfusionists, perfusionist candidates, and other medical personnel related to extracorporeal circulation systems. Participate in quality control studies. Participate in scientific events related to the field to ensure professional development, follow and evaluate scientific publications. Adhere to professional ethical rules. Show sensitivity to patient rights.
